Boys’ basketball: Jonah Mathews scores 41 points in Santa Monica victory
USC-bound Jonah Mathews delivered the game-winning three-point basket in the final seconds en route to a 41-point performance to lift Santa Monica past La Salle, 72-71, on Monday night.
Jaice Gardner, the 6-foot-5 son of former La Salle Coach Jalani Gardner, had 23 points and 12 rebounds for La Salle, which was making its debut under Coach Michael Lynch.
In the Westchester tournament, Dorsey received 21 points from Lafayette Dorsey in a 78-71 win over North Torrance. Taft won in the debut of Coach Derrick Taylor with a 67-54 win over Morningside. Hart defeated Washington, 71-59. Matthew Mondesir scored 27 points for Washington.
In the Maranatha tournament, St. Augustine defeated Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 52-50, on a rebound basket at the buzzer. Joe Hace scored 11 points and Jon Stretesky had 10 for Notre Dame. Austin Galuppo scored 24 points in West Ranch’s 80-60 win over Cajon.
In the St. Monica tournament, Crossroads defeated L.A. University, 81-71, despite 30 points from Jude Agbasi. Henry Ward had five threes and 19 points for Crossroads. Birmingham defeated St. Monica, 63-61. Adrian Byrd-Jelinek had 19 points. South Gate defeated Hamilton, 61-50. Cameron Ybarra had 14 points and sophomore David Mixon added 11 points.
Servite defeated Anaheim Canyon, 71-51. Anastasios Marcopulos made seven threes and finished with 21 points. Cameron Griffin had 17 points.
In the Corona Centennial tournament, Chino Hills defeated San Bernardino, 131-41. Lonzo Ball had 25 points. Andre Ball had 22 points, LiAngelo and LaMelo Ball added 20 points.
Cathedral defeated Santiago, 87-42. Lucas Siewert scored 21 points, Milan Acquaah had 17 and Semaj Shepheard finished with 16 points. Rancho Christian defeated Riverside Poly, 60-58. Isaiah Mobley and Greg Walter had 17 points each. Centennial defeated Rialto, 95-27. Jordan Griffin and Ike Anigbogu each had 19 points and Jalen Hill added 18.
Cleveland defeated Northridge Academy, 83-62. Wayne Currie scored 34 points.
Rancho Cucamonga defeated South Hills, 66-27. Kyle Lounsbury had 10 points. Other scores from the San Dimas tournament: Silverado 56, Upland 43; Ayala 87, West Covina 56; San Dimas 69, Bell Gardens 28.
Foothill defeated Dominguez, 72-52. Lucas Araujo had 19 points
