Boys’ basketball: Deschon Winston scores 43 points for Birmingham
Senior guard Deschon Winston of Birmingham has quietly stamped himself as one of the best basketball players in the City Section. On Saturday night, he decided it was time to add a little glitter to his game.
He scored 43 points in Birmingham’s 110-105 victory over Heritage Christian at Redondo.
“The best about his game was he didn’t force it,” Coach Nick Halic said. “Everything was in the flow of what we do. He was amazing.”
Junior Devonaire Doutrive had 30 points and Devante Doutrive added 20 points. Juhwan Harris-Dyson had 36 points and 11 rebounds for Heritage Christian.
In the featured game at Westchester, Bishop Montgomery won its 14th consecutive game with a 71-43 dismantling of the Comets. Ethan Thompson scored 19 points.
Jules Bernard scored 15 points in Windward’s 55-48 win over Compton.
Simi Valley defeated Chatsworth, 67-50, behind 31 points from Jacob Grebeta. Justin Campbell added 14 points and nine rebounds. Viewpoint defeated Oxnard Pacifica, 59-42. Randy White finished with 16 points.
Highland defeated Dorsey, 58-52. Deshay Gipson had 21 points and Dante Williams 18. St. Augustine defeated Crenshaw, 64-50. Chris Kendrick had 14 points for Crenshaw. Hamilton defeated Fremont, 51-39.
Villa Park received 24 points from Myles Franklin to defeat Brentwood, 71-63. Sam Clareman had 18 points for Brentwood.
Calabasas defeated Valencia, 72-52. Zach Favaedi and Blake Fisher each had 14 points.
Rolling Hills Prep (5-0) won its division in the Huntington Park tournament with a 68-60 win over Blair. Chris Koon scored 23 points and JT Tan 19.
El Camino Real defeated San Diego Lincoln, 77-62. Troy Biglow led the Conquistadores with 19 points.
Marvin Bragg scored 28 points in Gahr’s 70-67 overtime win over Santa Monica.
Redondo received 29 points from Zekiah Lovett in a 85-69 win over Los Altos. Jarod Lucas had 34 points for Los Altos.
Marvin Bagley III scored 24 points and Cody Riley 15 in Sierra Canyon’s 84-52 win over Bishop O’Dowd.
In the Huntington Park championship game, Fairfax defeated Narbonne, 57-56, to improve to 12-1 and secure a big win for City Section seeding purposes. Ethan Anderson scored 20 points and Jamal Hartwell 17. Kendal Frey led Narbonne with 18 points and Dominique Peterson had 14.
Gio Nelson scored 21 points and Jalen Hill 19 in Corona Centennial’s 73-57 win over JW North.
Kennedy defeated Granada Hills, 59-43. Anthony Simone scored 21 points and Luke Mata 17.
Camarillo defeated Rio Mesa, 73-42. Jaime Jaquez had 31 points.
Sophomore Jake Kyman contributed 22 points in Santa Margarita’s 70-64 win over Eastvale Roosevelt. Matt Mitchell finished with 35 points for Roosevelt.
Oak Park defeated Army-Navy, 90-53. Freshman Clark Slajchert poured in 30 points.
La Canada defeated Oaks Christian, 44-36. Sean Estes scored 21 points.
