Boys’ basketball: Shocker in Santa Ana as Mater Dei falls to Etiwanda
Garrett Carter hits big shot in 52-49 win
Call it the shocker in Santa Ana.
Etiwanda handed Mater Dei a 52-49 defeat on Tuesday night in a Southern Section Open Division semifinal. It’s only the third loss ever for the Monarchs on their home court since their new gym opened in 2006.
Garrett Carter, a junior guard, hit the biggest shot of the night, a three-pointer from near the baseline with 18 seconds left to give the Eagles a 50-49 lead. Then he made two free throws with seven seconds left. He finished with 13 points.
Etiwanda will play Bishop Montgomery in Saturday’s final (expected to be 6:30 p.m.) at the Honda Center.
In 1A, it’s going to be an all-Orange County final after Edison elminated No. 1-seeded Loyola, 79-65. Edison will play Foothill, which defeated Peninsula, 70-61.
In 1AA, Village Christian knocked off Tustin, 58-44. Bennie Boatwright had 20 points and 17 rebounds. Village Christian will face Great Oak in the final.
In 2A, Compton stunned No. 1 La Mirada, 57-52. Robert Lewis scored 19 points. Redlands East Valley defeated Santa Barbara, 61-58, in the other semifinal.
In 2AA, Lawndale advanced to its first championship game with a 54-48 win over Elsinore. Chimezie Metu scored 16 points and Brodricks Jones added 11 points. The Cardinals will face Anaheim Canyon in the final.
