Cathedral hosted a scrimmage against Venice on Thursday afternoon, and it’s clear the Phantoms will have a pair of junior standouts in quarterback Andrew Tovar and defensive end Hunter Echols.
Tovar played despite rolling his ankle earlier in the week. He’s coming off a sophomore season in which he passed for 45 touchdowns.
Left-handed, smart and possessing terrific instincts, Tovar is perfect for running Coach Kevin Pearson’s uptempo attack. He’s going to have a good group of receivers, so the Phantoms figure to move the ball often as long as the line is protecting the quarterback.
Echols is a 6-foot-4, 220-pound pass rusher with quickness and growing skills. It’s going to be interesting to see how he develops over the course of the season.
Venice’s strength is its offensive line. They’re big, experienced and should provide a foundation to build around on offense.
Cathedral opens on Sept. 4 against Muir. Venice opens against Granada Hills next Friday.
