Football: Cathedral (5-0), St. Francis (5-0) lead strong Angelus League

The Angelus League begins on Friday night, and even though most people think the title will be decided when Cathedral (5-0) plays St. Francis (5-0) on Oct. 28 at Cathedral, don’t think the competition won’t be intense.

Opening games on Friday have Cathedral at St. Paul (2-3); La Salle (4-1) at St. Francis, and Salesian (4-1) at Harvard-Westlake (3-2).

The league has produced some outstanding individual performers. The Cathedral receiving duo of Arex Flemings and Jamire Calvin have combined to catch 13 touchdown passes.

St. Francis quarterback Michael Bonds has 11 touchdown passes. La Salle running back Amon Milliner has rushed for 1,024 yards and 12 touchdowns. No team has held him lower than 161 yards rushing and in his last three games, he has gained 256, 239 and 242 yards.

Salesian quarterback Robbie Blosser has passed for 1,512 yards and 23 touchdowns. Harvard-Westlake freshman quarterback Jameson Wang has passed for 1,173 yards and 11 touchdowns.

St. Paul running back Nick Redick rushed for 215 yards last week in a win over Warren.

So there’s lots of talent in a league that should send most of its teams to the playoffs in various divisions.
