Football: Crenshaw’s Robert Garrett is in a singing mood

Every fall, I look forward to my phone conversation with Crenshaw Coach Robert Garrett trying to ask him for any information about players or his team. Let’s just say he doesn’t have much to say on either subject.

This week, Garrett, the head coach since 1988, was in a singing mood.

“We’re no good, we’re no good, baby, we’re no good,” he was singing on the phone.

Then he broke into a Drake song, “Started from the bottom now we’re here.”

It’s a little silly implying the Cougars, winners of last season’s City Section Division I title, are no good. In fact, the word from others is that Crenshaw could be quite good down the road.

Among the returnees are defensive backs Marcus Walton and Garreth Norwood, plus a group of players up from a good freshman-sophomore team. Junior defensive back Aundre Carter is the brother of former Crenshaw standout Raymond Carter.

Crenshaw opens its season Aug. 30 against Long Beach Poly at Mission Viejo.
