Quarterback Jonathan Bautista returns to Garfield
After withdrawing from Garfield earlier this week and transferring to rival Roosevelt, sophomore quarterback Jonathan Bautista returned to Garfield on Friday, coach Lorenzo Hernandez said.
Bautista apparently left for academic reasons but decided to return after the academic program he thought he was enrolling in didn’t fulfill his expectations.
Hernandez said he intends to welcome Bautista back to the program.
“Just when you think you’re growing as a coach and have it all figured out, you don’t,” Hernandez said. “I learned a lot from this situation.”
Bautista helped Garfield go 13-2 last season while passing for 1,500 yards.

Transfers don’t happen too often between the teams. Hernandez remembers a running back leaving Garfield for Roosevelt in the late 1990s and a lineman in 2004.
The two schools play in the annual East L.A. Classic.
