Angels can’t hold back Yankees in 4-3 loss

KEY MOMENT: No. 9 hitter Brian Roberts, who entered with a .239 average, no home runs and four runs batted in, drove a knee-high fastball from Angels reliever Ernesto Frieri over the right-field wall in the top of the ninth for the Yankees’ game-winning run.

AT THE PLATE: Mike Trout ended an 0-for-12 skid and capped a 10-pitch at-bat with a two-out triple off the right-center field wall in the eighth inning. Then he scored on Albert Pujols’ single to left for a 3-3 tie. The Angels scored their first two runs in the third, on sacrifice flies by Erick Aybar and Trout. The Yankees took a 3-2 lead in the eighth when Carlos Beltran singled to center to put runners on first and third and Alfonso Soriano smoked an RBI single to left. Roberts capped a two-run fifth with an RBI single.

ON THE MOUND: Both starters were outstanding. Angels left-hander C.J. Wilson gave up three runs and seven hits in eight innings, striking out five, walking three and throwing 125 pitches. Yankees right-hander Hiroki Kuroda gave up three runs — one earned — and five hits in 72/3 innings, striking out eight and walking none. New York closer David Robertson retired the side in order in the ninth for his fifth save.

REHAB REPORT: Right fielder Kole Calhoun ran lightly on the field Tuesday for the first time since suffering a sprained right ankle April 15. He will resume his rehabilitation in Arizona, along with left fielder Josh Hamilton (left-thumb surgery), when the Angels go on the road Friday. … Reliever Dane De La Rosa (shoulder, forearm injuries) threw a one-two-three inning for triple-A Salt Lake, showing good command of a fastball that was clocked between 90-93 mph.

Left fielder Grant Green was scratched after he jammed the ring finger on his left hand. Raul Ibanez moved from designated hitter to left field and C.J. Cron started at DH.
