Reds’ Johnny Cueto again is headed for the disabled list

Cincinnati Reds right-handed starter Johnny Cueto is headed to the disabled list for the third time this season.

Cueto returned to Cincinnati on Saturday to be examined after leaving the series opener at Texas on Friday night because of tightness in his right lateral muscle.

Manager Dusty Baker hadn’t received a report about that exam before Saturday’s game, but said the Reds would be making a move. He called the setback for Cueto disheartening.

Right-hander Logan Ondrusek had joined the Reds in Texas from triple-A Louisville.

Cueto, the Reds’ opening-day starter, was on the DL from April 15 to May 19 because of a strained right lat. He sat out the first half of June with what was called a strained right shoulder, though it was related to the problem in his upper back.

Evan Longoria doesn’t start for Rays

Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria was out of the starting lineup for the first time this season Saturday night because of a sore right foot.

Longoria left Friday night’s game against Detroit after irritating the plantar fasciitis, which has bothered him for the last month. He also is expected to sit out Sunday against the Tigers.

Longoria has 17 home runs and 47 runs batted in.

Orioles recall Jair Jurrjens

The Baltimore Orioles have recalled right-hander Jair Jurrjens from triple-A Norfolk and designated first baseman Travis Ishikawa for assignment.

Jurrjens was summoned to be the long man in the bullpen after Kevin Gausman pitched 41/3 innings Friday night.

Manager Buck Showalter said, “I just felt like we needed some coverage in our bullpen.”

Ishikawa had two hits in 17 at-bats with Baltimore. He was not bitter. He said, “I think it might have been different if I had played a lot better, so I can’t fault them for it.”

Ishikawa said his family had just joined him in Baltimore, so instead of facing the New York Yankees on Sunday, he plans to visit the zoo.

There’s a chance he could be traded, waived or accept an assignment to Norfolk.

Diamondbacks activate J.J. Putz

Closer J.J. Putz was activated from the 15-day disabled list by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Sidelined since May 7 because of a strained right elbow, Putz pitched four games during an injury rehabilitation assignment with triple-A Reno.

To make room for Putz on the active roster, reliever Zeke Spruill was optioned to Reno.
