Red Sox’s Dustin Pedroia might sit out rest of season
Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia might sit out the rest of the season because of soreness in his left hand and left wrist.
Manager John Farrell raised the possibility Tuesday before Boston’s game with the Baltimore Orioles. Farrell said Pedroia has been bothered by the ailment since midseason and an MRI exam Tuesday showed increased inflammation.
In 135 games, Pedroia is batting .278 with seven home runs and 53 runs batted in.
Mets’ David Wright is out of lineup
Third baseman David Wright was scratched from the New York Mets’ lineup because of increased soreness in his left shoulder.
Wright has had trouble with the shoulder since mid-June and his production has been down this season.
He is hitting .269 with eight home runs — none after July 11 — and 63 RBIs.
Rays to shut down Drew Smyly for rest of season
The Tampa Bay Rays are ending Drew Smyly’s season after 153 innings.
Smyly, 25, was 9-10 with a 3.24 earned-run average, including 3-1 with a 1.70 ERA since he was acquired from Detroit on July 31 as part of a three-team trade that sent David Price from the Rays to the Tigers.
Manager Joe Maddon said a player likely would be promoted from the minors to take Smyly’s turn in the rotation Friday at Toronto.
Tigers to activate Joakim Soria
Detroit Tigers Manager Brad Ausmus said that reliever Joakim Soria will be activated Wednesday, a month after he went on the disabled list because of a left oblique strain.
Soria threw a simulated game Monday, and Ausmus said the right-hander felt good Tuesday.
The Tigers acquired Soria from Texas to help their bullpen, but he made only six appearances for Detroit before the injury.
Soria is 2-4 with a 3.58 ERA and 17 saves.
