Update: The U.S. can join Mexico in the quarterfinals with a victory over Panama, but the Central Americans, ranked 67th on the FIFA world list, figure to offer a tougher test than Canada, the U.S. opening-match opponent. History is on the Americans’ side since they’ve never lost in the opening round of a Gold Cup and are 6-0-2 against Panama all-time. But the last three meetings in Gold Cup play have been nail-biters. Jozy Altidore had a goal and an assist in the U.S. win over Canada. That bodes well for the Americans’ long-silent forward line, which did not score a goal in last summer’s World Cup.
