Joe Stein, Julian Harrell lead Loyola to Division 1A title

Los Angeles Loyola 74, Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley 58: Joe Stein had 23 points and Julian Harrell added 18 points and 10 rebounds as top-seeded Los Angeles Loyola (24-5) never trailed and led by as many as 22 points to defeat Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley, 74-58, in the boys’ Southern Section Division 1A final on Saturday.

Nick Thomas had 19 points and Stephen Short added 16 for the third-seeded Cougars (24-7), who pulled to within 58-49 with 4:10 left on back-to-back baskets by Aleks Lipovic. Loyola responded with a 7-2 run to build an insurmountable advantage.

Ventura 56, Mission Viejo 53 (OT): Dylan Houck made two free throws to give the Cougars a 56-53 lead with 10.3 seconds remaining in overtime, and they held on to win the boys’ Division 2AA final. Evan Zeller got an offensive rebound after a missed three-pointer and scored with 1.5 seconds left for Mission Viejo, but the Diablos had no timeouts and the clock ran out before Ventura inbounded the ball.

Jon McMurry had 13 points, Corey Quintana had eight and Jaren Wilson added seven for the top-seeded Cougars (29-2), who rallied from a 36-30 deficit at the start of the fourth quarter. Mission Viejo’s James Cramer made two free throws to tie the score, 49-49, with 3.0 seconds left in regulation, and McMurry missed a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer. Zeller had 18 points to lead the second-seeded Diablos (29-2).

North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake 47, Inglewood 45: Rhon Mitchell missed a potential score-tying bank shot with nine seconds left for Inglewood, and the top-seeded Wolverines survived in the boys’ Division 3A final. Damiene Cain had 12 points and Zena Edosomwan added 11 for Harvard-Westlake (27-4), which was outscored, 17-7, in the fourth quarter.

Lewis Dix got the rebound of Mitchell’s miss and was fouled by Inglewood’s Dammond Rogers with three seconds left. Dix missed the front end of a one-and-one and the ball went out of bounds off Harvard-Westlake with 0.9 of a second left to give the third-seeded Sentinels (24-7) possession, but they didn’t get a shot off in time.

Julius Bilbrew had 15 points and nine rebounds and Mitchell added 10 points for Inglewood.

Westlake Village Oaks Christian 66, Sherman Oaks Buckley 48: Blair Holliday finished with 26 points, five assists and five steals and Chass Bryan had 14 points for the top-seeded Lions (24-7), who built a 32-11 halftime lead en route to the boys’ Division 4A title.

Tyler Coppin Carter had 22 points and Larry Bush added nine points for the sixth-seeded Griffins (22-7), who pulled to within 43-27 after three quarters.

Cerritos Gahr 63, Lakewood Mayfair 48: Davon Potts scored 15 points and Michael Alvarez added 12 to lead the seventh-seeded Gladiators (24-7) to the boys’ Division 2A title.

Dion Wright had 12 points and Corey Foster added 11 for the fifth-seeded Monsoons (25-6), who fell behind by seven points early in the fourth quarter before cutting the deficit to 47-45 with 2:42 left.
