Westlake flexes its power in win over St. Bonaventure

Hold off on the coronation of Anaheim Servite as Southern California’s No. 1 football team and the likely representative against Concord De La Salle in next month’s Open Division bowl game at the Home Depot Center.

The Westlake Warriors are 10-0 and stating their case week after week that they deserve to be in the mix for No. 1.

With junior running back Dashon Hunt rushing for 187 yards in 16 carries and scoring two touchdowns, Westlake Village Westlake knocked off Ventura St. Bonaventure, 35-14, on Thursday night to win the Marmonte League championship at Moorpark College.

“It feels amazing,” Hunt said. “This is why we practice so hard. Our offensive line is unbelievable. They’re outrageously good.”

Hunt, committed to UCLA because of his skills as a cornerback, showed off tremendous acceleration running behind a dominant offensive line. He had a 70-yard touchdown run.

Quarterback Justin Moore completed 15 of 20 passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns.

St. Bonaventure (8-2) received 140 yards rushing from Zachary Green and 194 yards passing from Marc Evans.

It was only fitting that to earn his 200th career victory, Westlake Coach Jim Benkert needed to work a little.

Twice the Warriors called timeouts at decisive moments in the first half. The stoppages gave them time to think and regroup. St. Bonaventure tried to get off a quick snap on fourth and three from the 10-yard line at the outset of the second quarter. Time out Westlake. On the next play came an incomplete pass.

Westlake had second and five from the St. Bonaventure seven. Time out Westlake to discuss things. Then Moore connected with Connor Cook on a seven-yard touchdown pass. The Warriors led 21-7 at halftime and never looked back.

They will be the No. 1-seeded team in the Northern Division playoffs, and a 14-0 season would surely put them in their first CIF state bowl game.

60-yard field goal

Riverside King finished 0-10, but Garrett Swanson went out in style, making a 60-yard field goal against Corona Centennial on Thursday.

He also averaged 46 yards a punt this season.

Coliseum is out

The City Section announced this week that its City Section Division I championship football game won’t be played at the Coliseum because of financial reasons.

A doubleheader will be played Dec. 9 at East Los Angeles College, with the Division II final at 4 p.m., followed by Division I at 8.

City Section Commissioner Barbara Fiege said the cost would have been a minimum of $22,000 to play at the Coliseum, and that’s not including $10,000 offered by two donors. East L.A. College is charging less than $12,000.

And City play ended Thursday with a stunner: West Adams 26, Crenshaw 25.
