Oaks Christian football Coach Bill Redell retires

Bill Redell, one of the most successful high school football coaches in Southern Section history, announced his retirement from coaching on Wednesday after 12 seasons at Westlake Village Oaks Christian and 24 overall.

Redell, 70, started the Oaks Christian program from scratch, and in 12 years built it into a powerhouse, winning seven Southern Section titles.

He also won a Division I championship when he coached at Encino Crespi in 1986 and also coached at St. Francis. His career record is 233-65-3. He was inducted in 2001 into the College Football Hall of Fame from his playing days at Occidental.

“I just think it’s time,” Redell said. “I’m 70 years old. I have to have my knee replaced. I think it’s time to go. I think guys can hang on too long. I’ve had a great 12 years at Oaks Christian. Great teams, great players. I’ve really enjoyed coaching.”

Redell’s retirement opens a desirable coaching position. There are several assistants expected to be considered, including Mark Bates and Casey Clausen. Defensive assistant Clay Matthews also is highly regarded. The school is opening the position to anyone to apply.

“His impact was profound,” Oaks Christian Headmaster Jeff Woodcock said of Redell. “I hired him before the school opened its doors. He’s been a good spiritual leader for the kids and is a wonderful role model. I’m going to miss the guy terribly. He’s going to [leave] big shoes to fill.”

Servite Coach Troy Thomas, who played for Redell at Crespi, said, “He had a great career at three different schools over a long period of time, and those guys are rare these days.”
