Lakers sign Texas forward Jonathan Holmes to a two-year deal
Jonathan Holmes’ two-year contract is worth $1.4 million.
The Lakers on Thursday signed forward Jonathan Holmes to a two-year deal.
Holmes, a 6-foot-9 senior from Texas, went undrafted in June. Through five appearances with the Boston Celtics’ summer-league squad in Las Vegas, he averaged 12.2 points and 5.6 rebounds while shooting 55.6% from the field.
In his fourth season with the Longhorns, Holmes averaged 9.2 points and 5.9 rebounds, dipping from his junior year’s 12.8 and 7.2, respectively.
Though the Lakers did not release contract terms, Holmes likely signed for a partially guaranteed $1.4 million, earning $525,093 in the first year if he sticks for the season.
With the signing, the team’s roster increases to the regular-season maximum of 15 players. The Lakers are expected to bring between 17 and 20 players to training camp in late September.
Holmes can play either forward position, although the Lakers are already quite crowded at the four with Julius Randle, Brandon Bass, Ryan Kelly, Larry Nance Jr. and Tarik Black.
The Lakers may start Kobe Bryant at small forward, backed up by Nick Young and rookie Anthony Brown. Both Bryant and Young are traditionally shooting guards, though both have played at the three throughout their career.
