Around the Horn: Dansby Swanson bumps Darin Erstad off the top of a list
Atlanta’s Dansby Swanson is the first position player taken No. 1 in the draft to debut the year after being drafted since Darin Erstad of the Angels in 1996. … The Giants have lost six games this season that they at one point led by at least four runs. That is the most in the majors this year. … Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard has three homers this season, tying the team record for most in a season. Tom Seaver had three in 1972, and Walt Terrell had three in 1983. … David Ortiz would love to see Jonathan Papelbon return to Boston now that he has been released by Washington. “I don’t know what happened there at the Nationals, but he was a great guy and we would welcome him back with open arms,” Ortiz told ESPN Deportes. … Yankees outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury has reached base by catcher’s interference 10 times this season, a major league record. The old record was eight by Roberto Kelly in 1992. The career record is 29 by Pete Rose. Ellsbury has 23. No one else has had more than 18. … With an RBI on Tuesday, Carlos Beltran passed Carlos Delgado for most career RBIs by a player born in Puerto Rico. Beltran has 1,513 RBIs. … Jose Altuve is the first Astros player to get 1,000 hits in his first six seasons. … Blue Jays Manager John Gibbons and third baseman Josh Donaldson had to be separated in the dugout during a game Wednesday. Gibbons was apparently mad at Donaldson for throwing his bat into the dugout after striking out. … The Astros released prospect Danry Vasquez on Wednesday after a video surfaced that showed him hitting his girlfriend in the stairwell of Houston’s minor-league affiliate in Corpus Christi, Texas. … Oakland outfielder Coco Crisp told the San Francisco Chronicle that he believes the A’s are deliberately trying to prevent him from playing in 130 games this season so his $13-million vesting option won’t kick in. “I’m extremely hurt, the way things are being handled. … This has been my favorite organization going back to when I was a kid because of Rickey Henderson, and I’ve enjoyed playing here so much.” Crisp has played in 93 games but has been sitting out against left-handers and is rarely used as a pinch-hitter.
