Dee Gordon suspended for 80 games after testing positive for PEDs
Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon returns to the dugout after scoring a run against the Dodgers on a balk in the seventh inning Thursday night.
About an hour after he drove in the tying run in a 5-3 Dodgers loss, Miami Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon was suspended for 80 games for violating baseball’s performance-enhancing drug policy.
Gordon, who won the National League batting title in 2015 after the Dodgers traded him away following the 2014 season, tested positive for exogenous testosterone and clostebol, a modified form of testosterone.
Gordon, a 28-year-old, two-time All-Star, is the son of longtime big league reliever Tom Gordon. He hit .333 in his first season as a Marlin. He signed a five-year, $50-million extension heading into 2016.
Marlins President David Samson (shown in video below) condemned Gordon’s use of performance-enhancing drugs but said the team will support him moving forward.
Major League Baseball announced the suspension immediately after Thursday’s game with the Dodgers. It is unclear why Gordon was allowed to take part in the game with the suspension looming.
He played a major role in deciding the Dodgers’ defeat.
Not only did Gordon tie the score with his hit in the seventh inning, he induced a balk off reliever Pedro Baez to pad Miami’s advantage.
