Chargers agree to lease in Costa Mesa in case they relocate to L.A.
The San Diego Chargers have agreed to lease a building and an adjacent parcel of land in Costa Mesa in case they decide to join the Rams and become the second NFL team in Los Angeles, according to documents obtained by The Times.
Chargers President and CEO Dean Spanos has said he has not made a decision about leaving San Diego, and will not do so until after his team’s Jan. 1 finale. As part of the NFL agreement that allowed the Rams to return to Los Angeles from St. Louis, the Chargers were given a one-year option to join them as a tenant at the Inglewood stadium, which is scheduled to open in 2019. That option expires Jan. 15 and transfers to the Oakland Raiders if the Chargers choose to stay.
The Chargers have agreed to a lease with the owners of Building C of the Hive, located at 3333 South Susan Street, as well as the adjacent 3.2-acre parcel. The building and land would serve as the initial location of the team’s headquarters and training facility. The lease can be terminated if the Chargers decide to stay in San Diego.
Should the Chargers relocate, club officials would evaluate other possible sites in the Los Angeles region for permanent headquarters and training facilities.
