Brian Baker, ranked No. 546 in the world, makes the U.S. Olympic tennis team

Looking for the ultimate long shot at the 2016 Summer Games?

Try Brian Baker, a 31-year-old tennis player who, at No. 546 in the world, was named to the U.S. team on Friday.

Not only is Baker a relative unknown, he has spent much of the last seven years undergoing 11 surgeries on his knees, back, right elbow and both hips.

Something known as a “protected ranking” — afforded to players who miss time with injury — helped him qualify for consideration.

Others on the American squad, which was almost completely finalized on Friday, should be more familiar to fans.

Serena and Venus Williams will play, as will the reigning Olympic doubles champions, Bob and Mike Bryan.

The men’s singles were weakened when John Isner and Sam Querrey withdrew from consideration.

U.S. officials have yet to name a mixed doubles team.
