London Olympics: Steven Lopez loses first match in taekwondo
LONDON -- The Olympics is turning into a non-event for the Lopez family, at least in taekwondo.
Two-time Olympic champion Steven Lopez lost his opening match Friday, beaten by Ramin Azizov of Azerbaijan in the men’s under-80-kilogram event.
Azizov is seeded No. 1. Lopez must now hope that Azizov keeps advancing so that Lopez can try to get back into bronze-medal contention through the repechage. Lopez said he has been bothered by an ankle injury.
On Thursday, Lopez’s sister, Diana, was also a first-round loser after feeling a pop in her knee during a repechage fight.
Steven and Diana, from Houston, are coached by their brother Mark, who is a former Olympian.
