Odell Beckham blasts the Rams for a ‘lowest of the lows’ contract offer

Rams coach Sean McVay and his players make no secret about their desire for star free-agent receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to return to the team.

They keep a locker with his name on it and they have made numerous public comments about him since training camp.

But the defending Super Bowl champion Rams’ pursuit of Beckham apparently has not been as smooth as one of the routes run by the three-time Pro Bowl player, who is recovering from knee surgery and is not expected to be ready to play until perhaps late this season.

In a series of tweets between Beckham and other Twitter users on Wednesday, Beckham indicated that negotiations with the Rams did not seem to be progressing well.

“LA knows where I wanted to be… but they didn’t offer me…. ANYthing!” he wrote. “So idk what people want me to do, I def kno my worth and what the offer was isn’t reflective of that. So it’s tough to say that I can come on back even tho I thought I finally found that home !”

In another tweet, he said the Rams’ offer was “the lowest of the lows.”

“But YES LA treated me normal and special all in the same breath, we see how that played out! For both sides,” he wrote. “I went out to win a there knowin the risk of playin without an ACL… and then I got the lowest of low offers after that goin into the next season. Impossible.”

The Rams signed Beckham near midseason in 2021, and he helped them reach Super Bowl LVI. Beckham caught a touchdown pass early in the Super Bowl victory over the Cincinnati Bengals before suffering a left knee injury in the second quarter. The injury required surgery, his second major knee surgery on the same knee in three years.

If Beckham is ready to return during the regular season, he is expected to be highly sought by playoff contenders.

McVay said he was made aware of the tweets but did not sound as if the Rams had given up on signing Beckham.

“I love Odell, we have constant dialogue,” McVay said. “I think he also knows that certainly I don’t think that’s the last one that would come from us.

The Rams realize Odell Beckham Jr. is still recovering from knee surgery, but they have kept the free agent receiver’s locker intact and have high hopes he will come back to team.

“I’m not familiar exactly what it is. He knows how we feel about him. We got a little bit of time. But love Odell. Nothing but good things coming from me.”

McVay is dealing with more pressing concerns.

His team is 2-3 going into a game against the Carolina Panthers (1-4) on Sunday at SoFi Stadium.

The Rams are under .500 this late in the season for the first time under McVay. Their loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday followed an embarrassing Week 4 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers on “Monday Night Football.”

The Rams have lost multiple offensive lineman and defensive backs because of injuries, and the list of players dealing with issues is growing as the Rams limp toward an open date next week.

The Times’ Sam Farmer analyzes each matchup and predicts the winners in NFL Week 6. The Eagles will still be perfect while the Rams and Chargers will win.

On Wednesday, receiver Cooper Kupp and defensive lineman Aaron Donald were held out of practice because of foot issues, tight end Tyler Higbee did not practice because of an ankle problem and receiver/kick returner Brandon Powell did not practice because of a hip issue.

McVay said the Rams were “being smart” by not having the players practice and did not expect the issues to affect their status for Sunday’s game.

Left guard David Edwards was put on injured reserve Tuesday because of a concussion and veteran center Matt Skura was activated from the practice squad to the roster but McVay declined to say who would start at those positions against the Panthers.

The Rams gave up 12 sacks in the last two games. Right tackle Rob Havenstein, a team captain, said Monday that linemen held a players-only, closed-door meeting to address their mindset and move forward.

Left tackle Joe Noteboom, who replaced the retired Andrew Whitworth, is among the linemen who have struggled at times.

“Some things that are in alignment with what we expect from Joe, and then there’s some things he can do at a higher level,” McVay said when asked to assess Noteboom’s performance.

“I think he would be the first to be able to tell you that. ... He’s still a young developing player but we want to be able to see that growth and maturation occur a little bit more quickly.”

Cornerback Cobie Durant (hamstring) and David Long (groin) and safety Taylor Rapp (ribs) were limited.
