Rays roll to 8-0 victory vs. Tigers
DETROIT The carnival continued at Comerica Park Wednesday.
On the bases, a merry-go-round of Rays baserunners, rounding the bases after home runs and rounding third base and heading home for a few more. Out of the bullpen first came left-hander Kyle Lobstein on Wednesday night, then a carousel of Tigers relievers that couldn’t keep the visitors off the ride.
At the end of this game, a significantly shorter showdown than the 5-hour foray a night earlier, significantly less competitive than the Tigers’ 13-inning walk-off win, the Rays won, 8-0.
The Tigers totaled seven hits and were shut out for the eighth time this season.
They did not pitch well, led by Lobstein, who allowed five earned runs on seven hits in 52/3 innings in his second start since returning from a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Toledo. Lobstein allowed two home runs, walked two and struck out six.
In the fourth inning, the Rays scored three runs on three hits and a walk. In the sixth inning, Logan Forsythe hit a solo home run and then two batters later, so, too, did Tim Beckham to chase Lobstein.
Right-hander Buck Farmer relieved Lobstein and allowed a home run. Right-hander Jeff Ferrell relieved Farmer and allowed a home run. Right-hander Jose Valdez the Tigers’ 12th reliever used in the past two games relieved Ferrell and did not allow a home run. He threw a scoreless inning.
Limiting the Tigers’ lumber was Rays right-hander Jake Odorizzi, who threw six scoreless innings, allowing six hits, one walk and striking out six.
Anthony Gose was the only Tiger to record multiple hits.
In the loss, Farmer was lost with right forearm tightness he left the mound with team trainer Kevin Rand after allowing a solo home run to Mikie Mahtook in the top of the seventh inning and the Tigers lost their 75th game of the season, falling to 11 games under.500.
