College basketball: Nigel Williams-Goss helps No. 5 Gonzaga cruise past San Francisco

Nigel Williams-Goss scored a career-high 36 points, and fifth-ranked Gonzaga used its accurate shooting all over the court to remain unbeaten with a 95-80 victory at San Francisco.

Jordan Mathews scored 16 points for the Bulldogs (15-0, 3-0 WCC).

Williams-Goss made 12 of 15 shots from the field as Gonzaga shot 61%, made all nine of his free throws and also had 11 rebounds and six assists for the perennial West Coast Conference favorites in their eighth straight win against USF and fifth in a row on the Dons’ home court.

Jordan Ratinho scored 20 points as an inexperienced USF team (11-5, 1-2) hung tough against the more athletic, physical Zags.

at No. 19 St. Mary’s 81, Brigham Young 68: Jock Landale had 24 points and eight rebounds and the Gaels (13-1, 3-0 WCC) won their seventh in a row. Calvin Hermanson and Emmett Naar each scored 15 points for St. Mary’s.

Eric Mika had 28 points and 10 rebounds for the Cougars (11-5, 2-1), who had won four in a row. Mika made 12 of 17 shots.

No. 20 Purdue 76, at Ohio St. 75: Caleb Swanigan hit a free throw with left seconds left to give the Boilermakers the win. Ohio State’s Trevor Thompson tied the score at 75 with a layup with 15 seconds left but missed a subsequent free throw.

Swanigan was fouled on the other end and hit his first free throw but missed the second. Micah Potter grabbed the rebound and got it to JaQuan Lyle but his three-point try at the buzzer was off the mark.

Swanigan and Vincent Edwards paced with Boilermakers (13-3, 2-1 Big Ten) with 16 points apiece, and Dakota Mathias added 14. Jae’Sean Tate scored 17 points for Ohio State (10-6, 0-2) and Marc Loving added 14.

at No. 17 Arizona 66, Utah 56: Dusan Ristic scored 18 points and Lauri Markkanen added 11 for the Wildcats (14-2, 3-0 Pac-12), who used their size advantage to get the Utes into foul trouble and prevent them from getting many open looks on the perimeter.

The Wildcats held Utah (10-4, 1-1) to a long scoreless drought in the first half and four-of-21 shooting from three-point range overall to win their 14th consecutive home game. Parker Jackson-Cartwright had nine assists while controlling Arizona’s offense much of the night in his third game back from a sprained ankle.

David Collette scored 13 points despite battling foul trouble most of the game and Devon Daniels added 12 for the Utes.

at Arizona State 78, Colorado 77: Tra Holder sank a pair of free throws with 1.6 seconds left to give the Sun Devils the win. Holder grabbed the rebound of teammate Torian Graham’s missed three-pointer and was fouled by Derrick White as he threw up a shot.

Graham and Shannon Evans II scored 18 apiece for the Sun Devils (9-7, 2-1 Pac-12). Obinna Oleka added 15 points and 10 rebounds. White scored 35 points, including a layup that put Colorado (10-5, 0-2) ahead 77-76 with 25 seconds to play.

Men

at Pepperdine 71, Loyola Marymount 70: Chris Reyes grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back with two seconds left to give the Waves (5-10, 1-2 West Coast Conference) the victory, ending a nine-game losing streak. Reyes scored seven of his 21 points in the final minute and Lamond Murray Jr. added 19 points for Pepperdine. Buay Tuach led the Lions (7-7, 0-3) with 18 points.

at Cal State Fullerton 67, Hawaii 64: Lionheart Leslie scored 14 points and the Titans (7-7) survived a late scare in the Big West Conference opener for both teams to win their third in a row. Cal State Fullerton held the Rainbow Warriors (6-9, 0-1) to 34% shooting, including four of 21 on three-pointers.
