Barry Switzer calls Johnny Manziel names, then sings his praises

Barry Switzer isn’t too fond of Johnny Manziel as a person.

To say the least.

The former coach with three national championships and one Super Bowl victory to his credit had this to say about the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from Texas A&M on CBS Sports 920 in St. Louis on Wednesday:

“I don’t like his antics. He’s an arrogant little [expletive], I’ve said that and I’ll say it again. You know, he’s a privileged kid, he’s embarrassed himself, he’s embarrassed his teammates, his program, he’s embarrassed his coaches and they’ll all have to defend him because they’ve got to coach him.”

But that’s only half the story. Unprompted by the hosts, Switzer started talking about Manziel as a player -- and he couldn’t stop gushing.

“I have never seen a quarterback in college football take control of the game and control the game the way he does and put up the numbers he does,” Switzer said. “It’s fantastic what he’s done against good competition. Game after game after game he puts numbers up that are staggering.

“He’s is the most dominant, most dynamic college quarterback I have seen in a long, long time. I don’t know if I’ve seen one better.”

One of the hosts asked what the St. Louis Rams, who already have a starting quarterback in Sam Bradford, should do if Manziel is still available at the No. 2 spot in the NFL draft. He could barely get the question out before Switzer said firmly, “Draft him!”
