Danny Granger tells Doc Rivers he will sign with Clippers

After meeting with Clippers Coach Doc Rivers on Thursday night, free agent Danny Granger told Rivers that he will sign with Los Angeles, several NBA executives who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter confirmed.

Granger will sign after he clears waivers Friday at 2 p.m. PST.

Granger will have to pass a physical exam, and he’ll probably play Saturday night when the Clippers play the New Orleans Pelicans at Staples Center.

It was the second time this week that Granger and Rivers spoke.

The first time was when Granger called Rivers to express his interest in the Clippers.

Granger chose the Clippers over the San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat, Houston Rockets and Chicago Bulls.

The Clippers sold Granger on the possibility of eventually being a starter at the small forward spot, or at least a player who plays substantial minutes.

The Clippers like that Granger could bolster their outside shooting, especially with starting shooting guard J.J. Redick out with a bulging disk injury in his lower back and with guard Jamal Crawford listed as day to day with a strained left calf.

Granger became available after the Philadelphia 76ers bought him out of his contract on Wednesday.

Granger had been traded to the 76ers last week from the Indiana Pacers.

Granger, 30, played in just 29 games for the Pacers this season because of a strained left calf. He played in just five games last season with the Pacers because of left knee surgery.

But Granger, a former all-star, has averaged 17.6 points on 45.3% shooting, 38.2% on three-pointers, over his nine-year career.
