Hear Belmont fan belt out Miley Cyrus song to distract UNC shooter

Miley Cyrus must be proud.

The former Disney Channel child star who makes attempting to shock the world a part of her daily routine played an indirect role -- OK, an extremely indirect role -- in Belmont’s stunning 83-80 upset of No. 12 North Carolina in men’s basketball on Sunday.

Midway through the first half as the Tar Heels’ James McAdoo was taking a foul shot, a clever and/or narcissistic and/or inebriated Bruins fan started singing Cyrus’ hit song “Wrecking Ball” at the top of his lungs.

With the rest of the crowd in Chapel Hill silent, the tune came through loud and clear on the national TV broadcast and (possibly) caused McAdoo to miss on the attempt.

Of course, that only accounts for one of the four points North Carolina needed to avoid the upset. But maybe, just maybe, the man with the lovely (and did we mention loud) singing voice got into McAdoo’s head.

Although the North Carolina forward scored a team-high 27 points, he made just 11 of his 19 free-throw attempts. Can you imagine how tough it must be taking the line not knowing if you were going to hear the not-so soothing sounds of that guy crooning “The Climb,” “Party in the U.S.A.” or anything else from Cyrus’ catalog lofting through the rafters?

Or, worst of all, her pops’ “Achy Breaky Heart?” I shudder just thinking about that one -- it’s a wonder McAdoo made any free throws at all.
