USC football: Solidifying offensive line is goal, Steve Sarkisian says
Solidifying the offensive line and working new and previously injured players into the lineup are among USC’s goals heading into fall, Coach Steve Sarkisian said Thursday during a Pac-12 Conference teleconference.
USC opens training camp in early August in preparation for its Aug. 30 opener against Fresno State at the Coliseum.
Senior guard Aundrey Walker and third-year sophomore guard Jordan Simmons were offensive lineman who did not participate in spring practice while recovering from injuries.
Third-year sophomore Chad Wheeler played left tackle, freshman Toa Lobendahn left guard, junior Max Tuerk center, redshirt freshman Khaliel Rodgers right guard and third-year sophomore Zach Banner right tackle.
Sarkisian said incoming freshmen Damien Mama and Viane Talamaivao would be evaluated at guard or center when they arrive this summer.
Linebacker Lamar Dawson, defensive lineman Leonard Williams, cornerback Josh Shaw and receiver Steven Mitchell were among players who sat out all or part of spring because of injuries.
With Shaw sidelined, cornerback Chris Hawkins made the most of his opportunity. Sarkisian said the redshirt freshman’s growing mental and physical maturity stood out.
He also praised redshirt freshman quarterback Max Browne, who is No. 2 on the depth chart behind returning starter Cody Kessler.
“When Max’s number is called, whenever that is, he’s going to play great football for us,” Sarkisian said.
