Vince Wilfork announces he will play for Houston Texans

Five-time Pro Bowler Vince Wilfork, a key figure in the New England Patriots’ defensive line for more than a decade, says he is joining the Houston Texans.

In a statement released on his Twitter account Monday, Wilfork said he will play for the Texans next season. Wilfork thanked the Patriots and team owner Robert Kraft for their support during his time in New England. He said the Texans’ coaching staff “has made this exciting new transition feel like home” for him and his family.

Wilfork did not disclose details of his Texans’ contract. According to the Houston Chronicle, Wilfork’s deal is for two years.

Wilfork announced March 5 that the Patriots would not pick up his contract option for 2015 after his 11 seasons with the team. Wilfork was about to enter the final year of a three-year, $22.5-million contract. If he stayed with the Patriots, he would have been owed a $4-million roster bonus and up to $8 million next season.

Wilfork, 33, suffered a torn Achilles tendon in 2013. He had 28 tackles in 16 games last season before helping New England win the Super Bowl, his second title with the team.
