After reaching its second consecutive NCAA tournament, USC has given men’s basketball coach Andy Enfield his second consecutive contract extension.

Enfield’s contract was extended another two years, through the spring of 2023, the school announced Wednesday. Terms were not disclosed.

In 2013, Enfield signed a six-year deal, worth more than $1 million each year. A year ago, after Enfield emerged as a candidate for Pittsburgh’s coaching vacancy, USC gave him his first two-year extension.

Athletic Director Lynn Swann said Enfield had “established the USC program as an annual contender on the national level” and “built consistency and stability.”

Enfield has a record of 70-64 in four seasons at USC. The Trojans have improved each season of his tenure, from 11 wins in his first season to a school-record 26 wins last season.

Next season could be the first that Enfield has a fully stocked roster, though that will depend on whether forwards Bennie Boatwright and Chimezie Metu decide to put off the NBA draft for another season. But even if they leave, USC’s roster makeup would be more sustainable than it has been in years.

A mix of four-year college players and younger NBA prospects means the Trojans should be less buffeted by the volatility of inexperienced players and the caprices of draft decisions.

Over Enfield’s four seasons, USC has moved from the bottom of the Pac-12 Conference to the middle. The next step would be to contend for a league title with stalwarts such as UCLA, Oregon and Arizona.

After praising for the Trojans’ season at length in a monthly question-and-answer blog post he writes in his role as athletic director, Swann included a sharp reminder.

“They are not disappointed in their season,” he said. “But they know they could have gone further.”
