Police to set up DUI checks in Laguna Beach this weekend
Laguna Beach police officers will patrol various locations throughout the city this weekend as part of a DUI traffic safety campaign.
Officers will stop and possibly arrest alcohol- and/or drug-impaired drivers between 9 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday in areas with prior DUI-related collisions and arrests.
In the last three years, Laguna Beach police investigated 169 DUI collisions, which claimed three lives and injured another 55 people, according to a news release.
In California, impaired drivers caused 867 deaths and more than 23,000 injuries during 2013.
“Law enforcement emphasizes the preventable nature of drunk driving, reminding everyone that all it takes is a little planning ahead,” the release said. “Designate a sober driver or call a cab.”
The penalties for a DUI conviction can be steep — up to a $10,000 fine and jail time, police said.
Residents should call 911 to report drunk drivers.
