Hawaii: Dirt trails by day, luxury by night on this hiking tour of Maui and Lanai

Want to do more than hang around the pool on your next Hawaiian vacation? A new hiking tour of stunning landscapes on Maui and Lanai means you’ll be walking rather than lounging.
Travel company Backroads has created a six-day, five-night Maui and Lanai Walking and Hiking itinerary. The first of several 2016 tours begins Feb. 7.
The adventure begins on Maui, where participants will walk through lava fields along the Hoapili Trail, also called the King’s Highway.
Those boots were made for walking as visitors hike a trail through Haleakala National Park on Maui.
Remnants of ancient temples still dot the footpath, set amid the starkness of the last eruption of the Haleakala volcano in 1790. Guests will also trek into volcano’s giant crater.
After a ferry ride to Lanai, a walk awaits along the Koloiki Ridge Trail through a forest of eucalyptus and guava trees. There’s also a hike on the Naha Trail, a route once used by King Kamehameha and his troops.
The history of this seldom-visited island can be explored at the Lanai Culture & Heritage Center in Lanai City.

On Maui, guests spend two nights at the Hotel Wailea. On Lanai, three nights are booked at the Four Seasons Resort Lanai, which overlooks Manele Bay, popular for beach walks.
Tours are priced from $4,298 to $5,498 per person, based on double occupancy.
