Discover sea creatures at new display on Maui’s Kaanapali Beach -- it’s free
Show and tell isn’t just for kids anymore. A resort along Maui’s Kaanapali Beach now lets visitors get face-to-fin with marine life without ever having to enter the water.
The Sheraton Maui Resort has partnered with the Maui Ocean Center, an aquarium in nearby Maaleaea, to put on displays for guests at the resort’s newest feature, the Hawaiian Marine Life Hale.
The marine display is open to everyone, not just hotel guests, and it’s free.
Naturalists bring different sea creatures each day to the hut that sits just steps from the ocean along a public path.
The hale – that’s Hawaiian for “home” – is staffed from 9 a.m. to noon daily.
In addition to the rotating show-and-tell feature, visitors can also see critters that have taken up permanent residency at the exhibit, including hermit crabs and sea stars.
Then they can apply what they’ve learned in identifying sea creatures in their natural habitats steps from the shore.
The underwater area beside the rocky peninsula Black Rock is a snorkeler’s paradise. Sightings of honu (green sea turtles), marine animals and colorful fish are common.
