New French America Line to set sail on U.S. rivers in August

Share via

America’s newest river cruise line will launch this August with a single ship called the Louisiane.

As the name suggests, the French America Line will feature French-inspired decor in the 75 staterooms that hold 150 passengers. There are also a full-service spa and five restaurants and bars on the ship’s four decks.

Travelers can choose from seven categories of rooms, including some with verandas or French balconies (windows/doors that open but aren’t a true balcony). The ship isn’t new; it’s a refurbishment of the Columbia Queen.

Its home port will be New Orleans, and its maiden voyage will sail on Aug. 22.

Five- to 10-day cruises are planned on the Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, Cumberland and Red rivers as well as in Gulf Coast waterways.

The company takes an all-inclusive approach. Prices include:

--a stay in a hotel the night before the cruise;

--shore excursions at every port of call (bikes and helmets will be provided);

--meals (including a Currents Cuisine with healthy options of less than 400 calories);

--beverages, including wine and beer as well as soft drinks and coffee;

--free WiFi in public areas;

--on-board talks and entertainment;

--in-room iPads with e-books and cruise programs (shore excursions, entertainment, dining).

Sample price: a 10-day tour from St. Louis to St. Paul, Minn., on the Mississippi next September and October starts at $4,599 per person, based on double occupancy. The price doesn’t include port fees and taxes.
