Hawaii: Beach boys, the Waikiki ones, are subjects of photo exhibit
For more than 100 years, beach boys -- and we’re not talking about the singing group -- have surfed their way to glory on Hawaii’s famed Waikiki Beach. Now they’re the subject of a historical photo exhibit, “The Waikiki Beachboys,” featuring rarely seen photos and artwork.
The exhibit, at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, will continue through Dec. 31.
The show, curated by Matson Navigation Lines, features well-known beach boys such as Duke Kahanamoku and Chick Daniels who wowed the tourists who began to arrive at Waikiki from all over the world in the mid-1920s.
Many Honolulu visitors arrived aboard Matson Lines cruise ships and stayed at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, a Waikiki landmark that Matson built in 1927. The hotel is now part of Starwood’s Luxury Collection.
“Matson has thousands of photos, advertisements, artwork and menus from their hotel and passenger era,” said Lynn Krantz, the exhibit’s curator. “Putting the exhibit together was a long process, about eight months, as there were so many images to choose from.”
The photos and artwork are on large canvas prints lining the walls of the hotel’s Coronet Lounge. There is no admission fee.
