Hawaii: Kid camp explores ocean and culture of Oahu’s North Shore

Ocean sports and Hawaiian culture go hand in hand on a five-day summer camp for kids held at Turtle Bay Resort on Oahu’s North Shore. The idea is to teach skills such as surf forecasting and ocean science mixed in with activities that include bodysurfing, snorkeling, outrigger canoe paddling and other sports.

The Kainalu Academy runs the camp and describes its program as “an ocean version of Outward Bound.” Ocean safety, environmental education about Hawaii and side trips are on the itinerary for children 10 to 18 years old.

Participants also take side trips to explore some of the North Shore’s premier surfing sites, such as Waimea Valley and Kahana Bay. Kids must be able to swim, be comfortable in the ocean and must pass a 200-yard swim test on the first day.

Classes run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day and include lunch and snacks. Reservations are required.

When: Classes are offered Aug. 4-8 and Aug. 11-15.

Price: $800 per child for a five-day program. It includes transportation, lunches and snacks, hat and rash guard, and all equipment and instruction. Hotel and airfare are extra.
