Last call for fall in the Eastern Sierra? Where to go right now

It's a go.

For the most spectacular colors, forget trick-or-treating and jump in the car for an even bigger treat in the Eastern Sierra.

Here's what California Fall Color is reporting for this weekend.

The lakes

These dreamy photos of June Lake were shot last weekend at various points of the June Lake Loop north of Mammoth Lakes. Trees along the loop — with its four pretty lakes of June, Silver, Gull and Grant — are hanging on to their glorious colors, but likely not for long.

If you go this weekend, California Fall Color recommends these stops along Highway 395: Mammoth Creek, Lower Rock Creek Road, Lundy Canyon, Lee Vining Canyon, Conway Summit between Lee Vining and Bridgeport and the West Walker River.

Two more lakes make the "go now" list too.

Find a good vantage point to photograph fall colors against the turquoise waters of Mono Lake, the funky saline pool near the eastern entrance to Yosemite National Park. Photographer Alicia Vennos did, with spectacular results.

Vennos also snapped the more out-of-the-way location on the way to Lake Lobdell northwest of Bridgeport. It's a four-wheel-drive adventure off Highway 338 to get there.
