From LAX, Air France and Air Tahiti Nui offer nonstop service to Paris, and Delta, Lufthansa, United British, American, US Airways and Swiss offer connecting service (change of planes). Restricted round-trip fares begin at $1,319, including all taxes and fees.

WHERE TO STAY

Because there were four of us (read more about our vacation here), we chose an apartment in the Marais through Vacation Rentals by Owner, or VRBO, https://www.vrbo.com, an online vacation rental marketplace that lets viewers browse by arrondissement (Paris districts) as well as price and type of accommodations. The rate for a seven-night stay was about $1,400.

Paris Westin-Vendôme, 3 Rue de Castiglione, 1-44-77-11-11, https://www.thewestinparis.com. We splurged for one night on a room with a view. Doubles from about $345.

WHERE TO EAT

Les Éditeurs, 4 Carrefour de l’Odéon; 1-43-26-67-76, https://www.lesediteurs.fr. The place is made for people watching. Try the seared foie gras with mushrooms over creamy scrambled eggs. Entrees about $15-$30.

Les Enfants Rouges, 9 Rue de Beauce; 1-48-87-80-61, https://www.facebook.com/enfantsrouges. A favorite among critics. Prix-fixe dinner menu created by chef Dai Shinozuka changes daily; the three-course dinner is about $44, not including beverages or wine.

Café Jacquemart-André, 158 Boulevard Haussmann; 1-45-62-11-59, https://www.musee-jacquemart-andre.com. Located in the Musée Jacquemart-André, the café is in the former dining room of the mansion. The menu includes salads, sandwiches and light entrees such as quiche for lunch and pastries in the afternoon. Entrees $13-$18; prix-fixe brunch about $32; tea with a pastry about $12.
