It’s official: William Shatner will set sail on first ‘Star Trek’ cruise

For Trekkies everywhere, it doesn’t get better than this: Capt. Kirk of the Starship Enterprise, a.k.a., actor William Shatner, will headline the first official “Star Trek” cruise to the Caribbean.

The cruise slated for January 2017 will mark half a century since Gene Roddenberry’s “Star Trek” made its TV debut 1966. Shatner, 84, was a member of the original cast.

“Trek” alumni from TV shows and movies will schmooze with passengers on the Norwegian Pearl cruise, including:

-- Jonathan Frakes, who played Commander William T. Riker on the TV’s “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and in motion pictures;

-- Marina Sirtis, who played counselor Deanna Troi on “Star Trek: The Next Generation”;

-- singer and actor James Darren (yes, Moondoggie in the 1959 “Gidget” film) who appeared in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” for a few seasons.

And then there’s this from cruise organizer Entertainment Cruise Productions: “Quintessential locations from the television shows and films will be re-created onboard and events built around key characters and their defining traits.”

Fans responded to the cruise news on Twitter. “@WilliamShatner good morning. Just signed up for your 2017 #startrekcruise. And straight on till morning!” writes Bob Miller.

Others chimed in with “Beam me aboard! I’ll be there!” and “A Star Trek cruise?? With William Shatner?? Sign me up!”

There are 2,200 spaces on the ship for a six-day sailing that starts in Miami and stops in Cozumel, Mexico; Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island Great Stirrup Cay; and Nassau, the Bahamas.

Prices (based on double occupancy) start as low as $975 per person for an inside cabin and go as high as $7,500 per person for the Garden Villa suite. Prices don’t include port fees, airfare and ground transportation.

The company says this is the first official “Star Trek” cruise, which it licensed through CBS Consumer Products.
