La Jolla: Hotel La Jolla has a new look -- and a discount

Guest rooms, the pool deck and lounge, fitness center and more have been newly redone at the Hotel La Jolla in La Jolla. Kimpton Hotels has taken over the venue, which has 110 guestrooms, each with an ocean-facing patio or balcony. With the $4 million face-lift and reopening comes a deal that plays on the power of 10: $10 off the room price, $10 off parking, $10 credit at the hotel’s new Hiatus lounge, $10 credit at the Cusp restaurant ... you get the idea.

The deal: The Hang Ten Grand Opening Promotion includes all of the above plus a 10% discount on kayak fishing, scuba diving, stand-up paddleboard and other services at OEX Dive & Kayak. Free use of beach cruisers and a map with running routes also are available at the hotel.

When: The deal is good through Sept. 30.

Tested: I checked online for Labor Day weekend (checking in Saturday and checking out Monday) and found the promotional price of $259 a night plus tax available for a room with two queen beds. I also found a $199 plus tax rate available midweek Sept. 18-20. Yes, the price is only $10 less than the best available rate, but the credits and discounts (if you use them) add up. For example, parking is usually $20 a night but half off with the promotion.
