8 outdoor ice skating rinks around L.A. to help you glide into the holiday spirit
In a region where winter temperatures often rise above 80, we have no business being able to ice skate at will, but we can. Even at the beach. You never know where and when the urge to glide upon ice will seize you.
Here’s a sampling of outdoor holiday ice skating options around Southern California.

This winter’s possibilities are bolstered by the return of seasonal rinks in Santa Monica and DTLA’s Pershing Square, neither of which operated last winter.
Meanwhile, the Dodgers, whose stadium holiday festival in 2021 included an ice rink in the outfield, have not yet announced 2022 holiday plans.
In many cases, rinks are requiring or urging advance reservations. Be sure to check the websites for details on how to reserve.

Downtown L.A. Sports Venue
This seasonal rink will be open in front of Crypto.com Arena Nov. 26 through Jan. 8. General admission tickets are $25 per person and $20 for children ages 6 and under (rental skates included). For those who want to skip the line, there are a limited number of $45 fast passes sold online.
The hours Nov. 26 through Dec. 18 are 5 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. (during which time there are four 90-minute sessions).
From Dec. 19 through Jan. 8, hours are 4 p.m. to midnight (again, four 90-minute sessions). If it’s raining, check the rink’s Instagram @laliveofficial.

The Irvine Spectrum Center’s rink is open through New Year’s Day in the Giant Wheel Court (but closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas, with shortened hours on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve).
The cost is $25 per person (rental skates included) or $23 if you bring your own skates. The price for children ages 3-10 is $21, rental skates included. Jump-the-line tickets are available for $45. Helmets can be rented for $5, lockers for 75 cents.
Skating sessions on Sundays through Thursdays run from 2-3:30 p.m., 4-5:30 p.m., 6-7:30 p.m. and 8-9:30 p.m. On Fridays and Saturdays, sessions run at the same times, with an added session from 10-11:30 p.m.

Skating by the Sea, the ice rink at the Hotel del Coronado, is open Nov. 17 through Jan. 1 with varying hours. General admission is $40, or $35 for hotel guests. That includes skate rental. From the rink, you can see the beach, the Pacific and the grand old red-roofed Hotel del Coronado, which goes back to the 1880s.
There’s a rink-adjacent lounge called Frostbite that serves small plates and holiday-themed drinks and has fire pits where you can warm up post-skating.

This rink at the Ken Dyda Civic Center will run Dec. 16 though Jan. 8, with one notable footnote: The rink surface is synthetic ice, which organizers say is “a solid polymer sheet that interlocks with other panels to form an artificial ice surface for skating.”
Skating will happen in 30-minute sessions, ages 5 and up. The rink opens Dec. 16, operating 5:30-830 p.m. that night (with a tree-lighting ceremony). After that, it will run Dec. 17, 18, 26-31 and Jan. 2-8, 12:30pm -7pm. Admission is $7 for Rancho Palos Verdes residents, $10 for non-residents, skate rental included.
