Key Russia figures who are opposed to Vladimir Putin
A list of key Russians opposing Vladimir Putin, currently prime minister and seeking a return to the presidency:
Mikhail Khodorkovsky: Once Russia’s richest man. His conviction on charges of financial crimes widely regarded as politically motivated. Imprisoned now more than eight years, he continues to write on political themes.
Alexei Navalny: Lawyer and blogger regarded as Russia’s answer to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. He has gathered incriminating material on Kremlin-controlled corporations. Very popular with protesters.
FOR THE RECORD:
This article states that Mikhail Kasyanov served as prime minister under Boris Yeltsin. He was in the government during Yeltsin’s tenure, but he was not prime minister.
Eduard Limonov: Writer and longtime radical opposition figure, leader of the banned National Bolshevik Party. Skeptical of peaceful protests.
Boris Nemtsov: Former first deputy prime minister under then-President Boris Yeltsin in the 1990s. Coauthor of leaflet alleging that Putin was involved in major corruption.
Garry Kasparov: Former world chess champion. One of the leaders of the opposition Solidarity movement. Highly critical of Putin.
Mikhail Kasyanov: Served as prime minister under Yeltsin and Putin. Along with Nemtsov now leads the unregistered Parnas party.
Sergei Udaltsov: Leader of the Left Front group, which is considered more radical than the Communist Party. Jailed more than 100 days because of protest actions last year.
