Meryl Streep and her ‘Devil Wears Prada’ director jump into new springs

Meryl Streep is busy impersonating Margaret Thatcher in England, but she’ll soon be playing someone a little more … ordinary.
The actress is set to star in ‘Great Hope Springs,’ about a longtime married couple who go to a retreat to repair a marriage that’s fallen on hard times. The film is scheduled to start shooting in August, the production companies behind the movie announced Tuesday.
Mike Nichols had initially been in the mix to direct the film (based on an acclaimed script on Hollywood’s Black List). He won’t; David Frankel will take the director’s chair instead.
Frankel is the filmmaker whose career was revived with ‘The Devil Wears Prada,’ which of course starred Streep as the Anna Wintour stand-in Miranda Priestly. ‘Springs’ is being produced by the people behind ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’ (Escape Artists), ‘The Expendables’ (Guymon Casady, who executive produced that movie ) and ‘Juno’ (Mandate Pictures, which is financing ‘Springs’).
There’s no male star/husband yet on the film -- Jeff Bridges had considered but opted out several months ago, according to numerous reports -- but given Streep’s frequent collaboration with Stanley Tucci (and their chemistry in ‘Julie & Julia’) we’re imagining a fan petition for him may not be far behind.
