Forest Evashevski, twice a Rose Bowl winner

Forest Evashevski twice took teams to Rose Bowl victories as Iowa coach. He probably enjoyed the first game a lot more.

Evashevski, who died Friday at 91, was a star player at Michigan who turned the Iowa program into a winner. His team defeated Oregon State, 35-19, in 1957 and defeated Cal and its future NFL star quarterback, Joe Kapp, 38-12, in 1959.

Before the Cal game, Evashevski came down with the flu. ‘I probably feel lousier than any Rose Bowl coach in history,’ he told The Times after the game. And readers of that morning’s paper received three photos of him sitting along the sidelines, looking miserable. Seemed a couple photos too much to me.

He looked much happier in a photo after the Oregon State game I found in The Times’ library. Evashevski was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000.
