Who needs money to nab some new clothes?
Clothing-swap parties and events are on the rise in L.A. And one of the biggest (and perhaps hairiest) in recent memory is set to unfurl in North Hollywood on Saturday.
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Frugal Festival Summer Swap will take place at the North Hollywood Performing Arts Center (11020 Magnolia Blvd.) And unlike small, civilized swaps — where you bring items to swap with other people via polite haggling — this one is more of a snatch-and-grab situation.
Here’s how it works: You buy a Frugal Festival ticket here (for $10 if you’re planning on showing up empty-handed and $5 if you’re bringing a bag of swap-ables, which can include clothes, accessories, DVDs, CDs and books).
Those bringing items need to drop off their goodies between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. at the venue. Then there’s some time to kill while volunteers quickly turn bags of donations into a “swaptique,” which opens at 1 p.m. sharp.
At that point, you jump in line outside the makeshift ‘store.’ Once inside, it’s a virtual free-for-all, as swappers fan out across the space, laying quick claim to that ‘Dances With Wolves’ DVD or Laura Ashley floral dress. The rule is, you can carry out as much as you can fit in your swap bag (and pockets and purse), which you will receive at the door.
The Frugal Fest is being hosted by the owners of cheap-living websites BargainBabe.com and Swapaholics.com, who beg you to leave ‘your tired, your worn, your sad-looking and stinky’ at home this Saturday.
