I’ve long been a fan of New York-based costume jewelry designer Alexis Bittar, so I was happy to hear he will be opening three West Coast stores, two of them in Los Angeles.

Bittar, the winner of this year’s Accessory Designer of the Year Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America, does amazing things with Lucite, creating sculptural bangles and statement necklaces, as well as more delicate pieces. Two of my favorite bracelets were designed by him -- hinged cuffs in red-and-green tartan-patterned Lucite.

He started out selling his jewelry on the streets of Soho more than 20 years ago. Bittar’s creations are now stocked in more than 600 stores worldwide, including several museum shops such as the Victoria & Albert in London. But there is something about having your own boutique. Bittar opened his first in Soho in 2003, and has been growing ever since.

His L.A. stores, expected to open this fall, will have a ‘Victorian-meets-industrial’ aesthetic -- and lots of taxidermy created by artist Frank J. Zitz. They will be located on West Third Street and in Venice on Abbot Kinney.
