New York Fashion Week Fall-Winter 2011: At Peter Som, glamour on the rocks

At Peter Som, models in messy beehive poufs looked as if they had sipped one martini too many. It was like Som was putting 1950s glamour in the funhouse mirror.

Cigarette pants and a matching jacket with a flying saucer-like peplum were the color of Tang, while a lady-like sheath dress came in a clashing red-and-pink floral Jacquard.

A trench coat was bulked up with enormous wooly mammoth fur sleeves, part beauty, part beast, and a liquidy-blue sequin gown was at the same time sleek and slippery.

And yet, while there were a few memorable moments, as a whole, the collection wasn’t one of Som’s strongest. I wish he had had pushed himself even further.
