Design challenge: Vote on a dress to be worn by an Oscar escort

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences wants you to get involved in the onstage fashion we’ll be seeing during this year’s Oscars telecast — airing Feb. 27.
For the “Oscars Designer Challenge 2011,” nine up-and-coming fashion designers are vying to have their original evening gown worn by one of the awards escorts (the gals who carry the gold statuettes to the presenters) during the 83rd Annual Academy Awards.
Designers duking it out for the honor include four from L.A. — Natalia Romano, Clay Sadler, Angela Avanesyan and Octavio — and Carlin Katelyn Bischof from New York; Miriam Cecilia Carlson, Borris Powell and James De Colon from Chicago; and Zoe Hong from Oakland, Calif.
Members of the fashion and entertainment press will be introduced to the nine designers and their gowns at a runway fashion show on Feb. 15 at the academy’s headquarters in Beverly Hills. An advisory committee has selected the designers and paired them with local models, one of whom will wear the winning gown as she brings the iconic statuettes onto the stage of the Kodak Theatre on Oscar night.
Voting begins online Tuesday at 11:59 p.m. at Oscar.com (you must be 18 to vote) and ends Feb. 21. And starting Wednesday, the academy will be presenting a Web series “Oscars Designer Challenge: Behind the Dress,” which will be viewable on the website through Feb. 20.
The winning design will be announced during “Oscars Red Carpet Live,” the live arrivals show that will air on ABC at 4 p.m. on Feb. 27. The victorious designer will receive two tickets to attend the Oscars. And no doubt, they will have earned them.
