That gigantic green blob headed in your direction is the national tour of ‘Shrek the Musical,’ which producers said is scheduled to start in Chicago in June 2010.

No other cities were announced, but if ‘Shrek’ follows the same pattern as other kid-friendly screen-to-stage musicals, we can safely expect the tour to land in L.A. at some point in late 2010 or 2011.

Based on the DreamWorks Animation film and book by William Steig, ‘Shrek the Musical’ tells the story of a green ogre living in a mythical land who falls in love with a beautiful princess. The show features music by Jeanine Tesori and a book by Pulitzer-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire.

The Broadway production of the musical opened in December to reviews that were reserved but generally positive. The show is produced by DreamWorks Theatricals and Neal Street Productions.
