Museum of Latin American Art gets a new chief curator

Cecilia Fajardo-Hill, former director and chief curator of the Cisneros Fontanals Arts Foundation and the Ella Fontanals Cisneros Collection in Miami, has been appointed vice president of curatorial affairs and chief curator of the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach. Beginning Aug. 17, she will oversee the museum’s growing collection and shape an exhibition program that will embrace up-and-coming artists as well as recognized masters.
In her new position, Fajardo-Hill will join MOLAA President and CEO Richard P. Townsend in reshaping a 13-year-old institution whose founder, Robert Gumbiner, died in January.
A specialist in Latin American art, Fajardo-Hill was educated in England at the University of Essex and the University of London’s Courtauld Institute of Art. During her three-year tenure in Miami, from 2005 to 2008, she directed a nonprofit organization and collection devoted to contemporary Latin American art. The curator of numerous exhibitions, she also led Sala Mendoza, a contemporary art exhibition space in Caracas, Venezuela, from 1997 to 2001.
