Jeffrey Kahane withdraws from Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra’s opening concerts

Conductor Jeffrey Kahane has canceled his season-opening appearances with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra due to illness, according to the organization.

Kahane, the company’s music director, is recovering from mononucleosis and ‘has been advised by his physicians not to rehearse or perform until he is fully recuperated,’ the orchestra said in an announcement on Thursday. The conductor was scheduled to lead two LACO concerts on Sept. 25 and 26 at the Alex Theater in Glendale and Royce Hall at UCLA, respectively.

Taking his place on the podium will be Canadian-born conductor Julian Kuerti. The concerts will feature violinist Leila Josefowicz performing Prokofiev’s First Violin Concerto with the orchestra. Also scheduled for the concerts are performances of Mendelssohn’s Overture, Scherzo & Nocturne from ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’; Pierre Jalbert’s “The Infinite Spaces”; and Haydn’s Symphony No. 88 in G major.

In May, Kahane bowed out of LACO’s final series of concerts for the season due to his mother’s illness.
